iC Education is a SPOC: Small Personal Online Course designed to help teachers to bring in the classroom researches supported results in all learning activities.

Pierre POULIN (@ppoulin) wears many hats --- he is an elementary school teacher of 30 years, iClasse® iC Education Founder & CEO, TEDx Speaker, TEDxEd & edcamp organizer, Contact Link for ApprentissÂge™ (Learn With Grandma where students are willing to assist elders with common technology) and finally sessional lecturer for teacher-training programs.  With his students, Pierre published the 1st french podcasts on iTunes 13 years ago. He has been opened to change the classroom environment by getting rid of linear school text books & usual grid seating pattern since 2009. It is as early as 1999 in Toronto that Pierre has started to allow using any kind of educational technology or method to tap into the hidden strength that all students have and increase motivation and engagement.  iClasse is now a rising buttom-up innovation offered across Canada and slowly influencing in other countries.

Virtual worlds


Pierre Poulin, a grade 6 teacher in Québec and sessional lecturer in 4 universities, appreciates that technology allows him to bring out the best in all his students. For him, the classroom belongs to the student where he creates a warm and inviting environment. Technology has opened up new ways in which he can evaluate students and even reach ones that considered themselves to be failing.  For example, a group of 5 boys built (a school) an iClassroom model in Minecraft (a computer game where you use blocks lego-style to build anything you can imagine of a virtual world). The students invited Mr. Poulin into the 3D world and showed him how they calculated measurements such as perimeter and how they measured volume in the indoor pool.  In this way he could see/hear their thinking processes in ways that were inaccessible through more traditional methods.


Authentic audience


Poulin’s students were the first one in Canada to post short French podcasts on iTunes in 2004. His students would write the text and he would give feedback. Students could choose to read it themselves or have someone else read it. The quality of French writing escalated when students knew they had a public audience anywhere in the world. The students came from many different countries and relatives who heard the podcasts reported back how proud they were of them.

Our mission is to support teachers, pedagogical consultants and parents with the integration of technology in school and at home with an emphasis on perseveranceengagement,motivation and student self-esteem.
iC Education is an official certification program that consists of 40 hours of training, divided into 4 blocks over two years. The training program includes a redefined and improved technopedagogical approach to teaching,  strategies for classroom management and student motivation, as well as support throughout the training process. It is a unique program, offered in Canada and around the world, that gives you the opportunity to update your educational skills and expertise. Positive changes in teaching and learning  can be seen as soon as the first block is complete.


As a teacher, I have always dreamed of tapping into the inner strengths that all students have. To do so, I have decided to alter my teaching strategies.
One strategy was to reach out to the community surrounding our school and to get it involved in our kids education. We decided to use the skills of today's students by having them teach Web 2.0 to senior citizens in the community and to teachers at our school. We use students as experts. Students come to school with enough knowledge about technology to guide adults into a transition.
This program called SWAST (Students Willing to Help Seniors with Technology) engages students even more in their learning and helps them realize what they are capable of with what they learn in class. We want them to feel the need to come into class each day. This approach is based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and addresses major needs for students like connection, self-esteem, and task value.

Our 11-12 year old students help adults use computers in school and get at ease with multimedia tools linked to the Internet. This has quickly became a way to increase social responsibility among students. It helps reach early adopters and increase people's interest towards the project inside the school.Learn & experience the What, Why and How of iC. This session illustrate how courageous elementary school teachers, searching to tap into the hidden strength of students, use any kind of mobile & Web 2.0 technologies to achieve it. In iC classroom, getting rid of linear school text books & usual grid seating pattern were a first of many innovating steps. iC is a button-up innovation.
